Description

According to Greek mythology, Cepheus was the king of Ethiopia, husband of Cassiopeia and father of Andromeda. His wife drew the wrath of the gods because she claimed to be even more beautiful than the Nereids, daughters of the sea god Nereus. The reviled Nereids turned to the sea god Poseidon and demanded that the vain Cassiopeia be punished. Poseidon then sent out a sea monster to plague the shores of Cepheus' kingdom. The beast could only be appeased by sacrificing Andromeda to it. Chained to a rock, Andromeda awaited her horrific fate, but was saved at the last moment by the hero Perseus, who married her as a reward.
